Joint statement of Dutch parliamentarians on the Hamas-Israeli war 

We, as Members of Parliament of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, 

• are deeply concerned by the massive attack of Hamas, an internationally recognized terrorist group, on the citizens of Israel, which was conducted by infiltrating terrorists into southern communities as well as by launching extensive and indiscriminate missile and rocket fire;

• convey our deepest sympathy with the families and loved ones of over 700 people who were murdered in Israel and over 100 persons missing or kidnapped to the Gaza Strip, expressing also our strong support for the more than 2,000 persons who were (severely) wounded;

• strongly condemn the terrorist attacks on Israel and Israeli citizens, and express clear and full support for Israel's right to defend itself and to protect its citizens and its territory;

• call on the Hamas leadership for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages that were kidnapped to the Gaza Strip, thereby confirming the full responsibility of Hamas for the deteriorating situation as well as for the actions that Israel must take in response;

• call on the EU and all its member states to respond swiftly and rigorously to this breach of international (humanitarian) law, by condemning Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, by preventing any funds from reaching those entities, and by immediately suspending all financial support to the Palestinian Authority and other Palestinian factions who have openly or tacitly supported their operations and thereby contributed to this unforgivable tragedy;

• call on the European Union to add the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) to the EU-list of terror organizations, in order to sanction any individuals associated with the Iranian regime’s support for terrorism in the Middle East and beyond;

• call on the United Nations and the international community to also voice their support for Israel and to condemn the terrorist actions, and to remain committed to the international legal system which includes ending the disproportional targeting of Israel within UN-bodies.

Fifty years after the Yom Kippur war in 1973, Israel was again brutally attacked on one of its holy days – this time Simchat Torah. This is the time for the Netherlands and the European Union to show strength and unity in their resolve to strive for law, peace and justice.
